Excessive heat for Merced as temperatures expected to remain above 100 degrees for week

An Excessive Heat Warning has been issued of for the Merced area as high temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees through next week, according to the National Weather Service in Hanford.

Forecasters issued the warning, in effect from 11 a.m. on Tuesday through 8 a.m. July 9, according to Meteorologist Antoinette Serrato at the National Weather Service in Hanford. Serrato said the Merced area is under extreme heat risk meaning the entire population is at risk if individuals are not able to access adequate hydration or cooling.

According to forecasters, minimum temperatures are expected to remain around 70 degrees or warmer over the next week, leading to poor overnight recovery. Warmer overnight temperatures make it more difficult to cool homes at night with methods, such as using fans and opening windows, forecasters say.

Serrato said the Merced and Los Banos areas can expect to see the hottest temperature in the coming week on Saturday when temperatures are expected to reach about 111 and 112 degrees, respectively.

According to forecasters, the Merced area is expected to see high temperatures of about 102 degrees Monday, before cooling down to about 68 degrees at night. Tuesday temperatures are expected to reach about 106 degrees with temperatures dropping to about 71 degrees overnight.

Serrato said temperatures on Wednesday are expected to reach about 110 degrees with temperatures dropping to about 71 degrees overnight. The Fourth of July holiday on Thursday is expected to see area temperatures as high as about 109 degrees with an overnight low of about 70 degrees. Friday high temperatures are expected to be similar with temperatures of about 109 degrees before dropping to an overnight low of about 72 degrees.

According to Serrato, the Merced area is expected to see the hottest temperatures of the week on Saturday with high temperatures peaking at about 111 degrees before dropping to about 73 degrees overnight, while Sunday is expected to see high temperatures of about 110 degrees and an overnight low of about 71 degrees.

High temperatures are expected to reach about 109 degrees on Monday, July, 8, before decreasing overnight to about 71 degrees.

Forecasters advise area residents to take precautions, such as staying hydrated, staying out of the sun and staying in air conditioned rooms. Extra precautions are advised when going outside, such as limiting strenuous activity to the early morning or evening, wearing lightweight and loose fitting clothing and taking action if signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke are observed.

Even with high temperatures expected to consistently hover around 110 degrees for the remainder of the week, Serrato said the Merced area is not expected to reach or exceed the record hottest temperature of 116 degrees which was recorded in September of 2022.
