Exclusive: Hollyoaks star Emma Johnsey-Smith promises "dark" story

Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks star Emma Johnsey-Smith has spoken about the show's two new Blake family additions for the first time.

Emma's character Dilly Harcourt will be closely involved in the Blake clan's chaos this summer as newcomers Jez and Martha arrive.

Last week, Hollyoaks announced that Jeremy Sheffield is returning to the Channel 4 soap – eight years on from his dramatic exit as Patrick Blake.

Jeremy is taking on the new role of Patrick's twin brother Jez, while former Coronation Street and Benidorm star Sherrie Hewson is playing Jez's mum Martha.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy about Dilly's role in the storyline, Emma explained: "There is an element of awe when Dilly meets Jez, which she previously had when she was having hallucinations of Patrick.

"I don't think Dilly sees Jez necessarily as a father figure, but she just wants a connection with him and she's much more willing to hear him out.

"Obviously it's a really big shock to everyone when Jez turns up, but Dilly is straight away intrigued and she wants to get to know him. There's a lot of eagerness there.

"She's an eager beaver when it comes to Martha too. Dilly really just wants love and a family connection. She doesn't leave either of them alone and probably becomes a bit of a nuisance in the grand scheme of things!"

Asked where the story is heading, Emma replied: "Oh my goodness, it's such a hard question because it's really complex as a story and it's not linear.

"I would say just for the audience – look out for clues because all will be revealed, and it might not be what it seems at first. It gets dark and gets sinister, in true Blake fashion."

Emma added that she was delighted when she heard that she'd be working with Jeremy Sheffield and Sherrie Hewson.

She told us: "I was so excited, because I'd obviously worked with Jeremy momentarily when he returned for Dilly's hallucinations of Patrick. He was awesome to work with and we had a connection straight away – personally and on screen.

"I was also intrigued to find out how the character of Jez was going to differ to Patrick and he definitely does.

"I love Sherrie too – she is my favourite person ever, I think we're soulmates! We get on like a house on fire. She's really cheeky and I'm really cheeky. We're really naughty on set, to be quite honest!"

Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4 each weekday at 7.30pm. Episodes then air on E4 the following day, before getting their YouTube premiere a week after that.
