Fall lobster season on P.E.I. wrapping with strong prices

Lobster levy regulations for buyers approved by P.E.I. cabinet

The fall lobster season on P.E.I. ends on Oct 12 and Island fishermen say it has been a good one.

The president of the P.E.I. Fishermen's Association says prices have been higher than last year, the weather has been good and the demand strong. He also says landings have been on par with last year.

Craig Avery said in some cases fishermen have been getting between $5 and $6 a pound for canners and from $5.25 up to $6.50 for market size lobster.

"We are extremely happy with the price," said Avery. "There was high demand this year when the season started and you know we did a lot of promotion ... processors, brokers, buyers and fishermen."

"And you know it resulted in a lot of demand and shortfalls in ... some of the orders for the spring season and it turned out that there was a big demand in the fall and the price showed that. So the fishermen are really happy."

Avery also noted other fisheries such as tuna, halibut and mackerel have also been good this year.
