How far did TCU’s Sonny Dykes drop in annual college football coach rankings?

The Athletic has published its annual ranking of the top 25 head coaches in college football.

Two coaches from the state of Texas were ranked with three more receiving honorable mentions for just missing the cut.

The highest-ranked coach from the Lone Star State is Texas’ Steve Sarkisian who was ranked at No. 13 after leading Texas to its first appearance in the College Football Playoff where the Longhorns fell 37-31 to the Washington Huskies in the CFP semifinals. Sarkisian was unranked in the 2023 edition.

Another coach unranked in the 2023 poll but ranked in 2024 was Houston’s Willie Fritz who was selected as the No. 19 best coach in the country after an 11-3 with the Tulane Green Wave before accepting the job at the University of Houston.

The unranked coaches that got honorable mention included TCU’s Sonny Dykes who had been ranked No. 17 in the 2023 edition but dropped out of the rankings after a 5-7 season.

Former Duke and new Texas A&M coach Mike Elko also earned a mention as well as UTSA’s Jeff Traylor.
