Five people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries and a man arrested following a two-vehicle crash on the M5.

The incident happened on the M5 northbound at junction 12 for Quedgeley, just south of Gloucester, at about 02:15 BST. The motorway was closed for a number of hours, but has since reopened.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drink driving, drug driving and driving whilst unfit, Gloucestershire Police said.

Those taken to hospital have serious injuries but are in a stable condition, the force added.

Several emergency crews were in attendance, including Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and South Western Ambulance Service.

Gloucestershire Police and National Highways attended the scene to help manage traffic and clear the road.
