Former Coronation Street star Oliver Mellor welcomes first child with Rhian Sugden

Former Coronation Street star Oliver Mellor has revealed he and Celebrity Big Brother's Rhian Sugden have welcomed their first child together.

The married couple confirmed last year that they were expecting a baby after eight rounds of IVF treatment – and Oliver has now shared that Rhian has given birth to a baby boy.

Posting a series of photos on Instagram, including of their newborn, Oliver reflected on their journey as he admitted that "at one point I thought it might never happen".

"Our IVF journey has taken 5 years so this post is a little later than anticipated," he wrote. "At one point I thought it might never happen. I’ve never fully appreciated it when new parents gush but now I understand. Suddenly it all makes sense.

"All those times I took for granted when my parents told me they loved me and now I know what they meant. It’s a bit overwhelming isn’t it? This feeling of intense unconditional love. This baby that we’ve created. Bonded by blood and like nothing I’ve ever felt.

"If you’re still reading this and you have children then I hope these words relate. To any of you that are still trying, I know it’s hard. It’s really f**king hard! I pray this gives you the hope & courage to keep going.

The couple has received a host of well wishes in the comments, one follower writing: "Congratulations Oli, he’s gorgeous, so happy for you both! Enjoy the newborn bubble xxx."

"Congratulations to you both - the happiest news," another added, while a third wrote: "This really does give me hope!! congratulations to you both, baby boy is gorgeous!! I’m glad to hear @rhiansuggers is doing well too xxx."

Speaking previously about learning that Rhian was pregnant, Oliver – who played Dr Matt Carter on Coronation Street – told Hello! Magazine: “I was woken up by her calling out, 'Oh my God, I'm pregnant'.

“When I opened my eyes, I could see her holding up the stick from the test and smiling at me. I'll never forget the expression of sheer joy on her face or the happiness and relief I felt inside.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
