Former Macon basketball star Kowacie Reeves is leaving the Florida Gators. Here’s why

Former Macon basketball star and four-star recruit Kowacie Reeves Jr. is leaving the Florida Gators, he announced Thursday.

The 6-foot-6 guard, who was dominant for the Westside Seminoles before going to Florida in 2021, entered the transfer portal one day after the Gators lost in the opening round of the National Invitational Tournament Wednesday.

The transfer did not come as a surprise to most Florida basketball fans, as Reeves played fewer minutes as the season progressed. He was a fan favorite nonetheless, known for his style on and off the court.

Reeves topped the basketball charts in Macon in high school, earning a status as a four-star recruit during his senior season in 2020-21. He led Westside to a Sweet 16 berth in his junior year and won multiple regional honors for Player of the Year.

He received offers from Clemson, UGA and Stanford but chose to play at Florida, one of the first schools to offer him a scholarship when he was a freshman. He saw limited minutes but impressed while he was on the court in his first season, including a career-high 21 points in a game against Texas A&M in the 2021-22 SEC Tournament.

Reeves considered leaving Florida after the departure of head coach Mike White before this season, but stuck around for another year. He saw less action under new coach Todd Golden, starting only 10 games and losing playing time to breakout sophomore Trey Bonham. Reeves averaged just 8.5 points per game and shot 37.7% from the field.

Reeves has not announced which school he intends to transfer to.
