“Full House”'s Jodie Sweetin Remembers Filming the Iconic Hawaii Episode — and Everything That Went Wrong

Jodie Sweetin and Andrea Barber took a hilarious look back at the season 3 premiere on the June 18 episode of 'How Rude, Tanneritos!'

The Tanner family trip to Hawaii on the season 3 premiere of Full House was definitely a working vacation — except for Andrea Barber, a.k.a. Kimmy Gibbler.

“I was originally supposed to be in this episode,” Barber, 47, recalled on the June 18 episode of the How Rude, Tanneritos! podcast. “The night before we were to depart for Hawaii, a producer called up and said, ‘The episode is too long. We have to cut Kimmy out.’ “

However, as Barber recalled, the staffer noted, “We already bought the tickets, we already have your hotel room reserved. Please come with us anyways and just hang out by the pool.“ The actress then shared, “And I was like, ‘Yes!’ “

The days on the islands were much less peaceful for the rest of the Full House staff, podcast co-host Jodie Sweetin, 42, recounted. “No sitcom should ever leave the stage,” she said. “It’s always a disaster. We are a very well-oiled machine inside of a soundstage, and you take us out and … things go wrong.”

For one, within days of arriving, series creator Jeff Franklin injured his Achilles tendon playing tennis. “So he was now in a wheelchair and on copious amounts of pain meds the whole time,” Sweetin said.

On another day, “we were all told to go to one beach, and the crew was actually at another beach. And those two beaches were not anywhere near each other,” she added.

According to Sweetin, some productions bless the locations at which they might film before they start work, a fact noted on the Film Hawai’i website. “If I remember right, we didn’t do it,” the actress shared.

“Or maybe we did [and] it didn’t work. Maybe Bob [Saget] and Dave [Coulier] weren’t taking it seriously enough, and they were cracking inappropriate jokes during a serious ritual, and then karma,” she continued.

Despite the hurdles, “we had the best time,” Sweetin said of the 10-day trip in 1989.

She then recalled filming scenes with dolphins, saying it was “one of the most exciting moments of my life” as a 7-year-old actress. “I was 100 percent ready to jump right in. You can see from the gigantic smile plastered on my face [in the episode]. I believe that the reactions when we got out of the water [were] our kind of natural reactions, it was pretty amazing,” she continued.

Sweetin also had a less fun memory — being “hopped up on Dramamine” while filming a lengthy boat scene. "One thing about Dramamine is it knocks you out,” she said. “If you look at Michelle [Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen] in the entire scene, she’s wearing that life jacket, but she’s just leaned up against the table. She is 100 percent asleep.”

She continued, “You look at me and Candace [Cameron Bure] over in the corner when it’s group shots, we were all asleep. It was hot and we were out there forever.”

Despite the conditions, Barber said, “We had so much fun.” She then revealed that they took trips to the Dole Plantation and the Pearl Harbor National Memorial with family members in tow.

“I just remember it being a really fun episode,” Sweetin recalled. “It was one of the first times that we all got to travel together as a group, and I loved it.”
