High school football player from American Heritage suffers medical emergency during game
A high school football game between Miami Booker T. Washington High School and Plantation American Heritage School was halted and eventually canceled on Friday night after a player from Heritage suffered a medical emergency during the first quarter.
Medical staff from Heritage on the scene at Traz Powell Stadium on Miami Dade College’s North campus responded immediately when senior defensive lineman Timothy Burroughs-Love collapsed on the sideline. Paramedics were seen administering CPR to Burroughs-Love who remained on the ground for several minutes. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the call from the schools and Burroughs-Love was treated and eventually transported via ambulance to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
“We had three paramedics on the sideline plus two athletic trainers and we saw our player go down,” American Heritage athletic director Bruce Aven told the Herald moments after the emergency took place. “We called fire rescue. Booker T. sent over their athletic director plus their trainer and a doctor. They assessed the player and transported him to Jackson Memorial.”
Burroughs-Love underwent preliminary tests on Saturday and was in stable condition. He was responsive and later spoke to some of his teammates. He remains at Jackson undergoing further evaluation.
Burroughs-Love, a 6-2, 280-pound defensive tackle, is one of Heritage’s top players this season. According to 247Sports.com, Burroughs-Love has over 20 FBS-level offers including FIU, Temple, UAB, Dartmouth and Yale.
Burroughs-Love, who played on defense during the first drive of the game, came off the field after Booker T.’s lengthy touchdown drive in the first quarter. The two teams were getting ready to resume play with 4:49 remaining in the first quarter when he collapsed, prompting the game to be stopped.
Once Burroughs-Love was lifted onto the ambulance by paramedics, officials from both sides met and decided to cancel the game.
The game is not expected to be completed.
