Homeowner shoots suspect breaking into vehicles in Columbus. Suspect flees to nearby store

A suspect of breaking into vehicles was shot early Saturday after being confronted by a homeowner in Columbus, according to the Columbus Police Department.

Police said they were dispatched at 12:01 a.m., Saturday to the Benning Hills area of Columbus on reports of two males breaking into vehicles.

The homeowner confronted the suspects, one of whom advanced towards the homeowner, who then shot the suspect, according to police.

A few minutes later, police said they were sent to the Circle K gas station on Victory Drive and N. Lumpkin Road regarding a male entering the store with a gunshot wound.

The male, later identified as Deonte Smith, 18, was taken to a local hospital and listed in stable condition, according to police.

Police said a second entering auto suspect, a 17-year-old, was taken into custody with a stolen firearm in his possession.

Another firearm was found in the suspects’ vehicle along with more than 40 grams of weed, according to police.

Police said the 17-year-old suspect is charged with the following:

- Entering Auto

- Receiving Stolen Property (Firearm)

- Possession of a Firearm During Commission of a Crime

- Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute

- Possession of Drug-Related Objects

- Loitering

- Credit Card Theft

The release stated, “Arrest warrants were obtained for Smith. He will be transported to the Muscogee County Jail upon being released from the hospital.”
