IKEA Drastically Reduces Delivery Fees

The Swedish retailer will debut new IKEA Planning Studio concept in the Big Apple next year

Swedish furniture lovers, rejoice! IKEA has drastically reduced its delivery fees, according to a new outline on the company's website, a move certain to make delivery from the beloved Swedish purveyor much more palatable. Buzzfeed first noticed the happy news.

In the past, IKEA's delivery fees could be as high as $99 and depended largely on distance. Now, however, large items will incur a flat delivery fee between $29 and $59 (depending demand and distance), with small parcel items costing only $9. In other words, you could eat that famous lingonberry sauce on your couch for a not-unreasonable amount of money, although it appears as though the accompanying meatballs still have to be enjoyed in store.

Notably for those undergoing a large-scale, low-budget renovation, the website also mentions that the delivery fee remains flat for large items regardless of the number of items, making it possible to order an endless supply of Ektorp sofas and Malm beds for no more than $59. Additionally, IKEA promises delivery "beyond your front door," so said deluge of Ektorps and Malms could be carried to a room of choice in your home or business. (It doesn't say anything about assembling the pieces once they're in your house, however, so, unfortunately, that often daunting task is still on you.)

If those fees are still too high, though, IKEA announced last summer that it will be expanding to third-party websites for a test period in 2018. There are already a few IKEA items on Amazon, but if these partnerships are successful, the day of IKEA furnishings with Prime free shipping might actually be a reality.
