IndieWire Earns Record 9 Southern California Journalism Award Nominations, Including Best News Website
This year’s nominees for the 66th Southern California Journalism Awards were released today by the Los Angeles Press Club and IndieWire received a site-record nine nominations. Coming on the heels of our wins last year for Criticism of TV and Entertainment Reporting and following our 2022 win for Best Website, Traditional News Organization, the entire IndieWire staff has been nominated for Best Website, News Organization Exclusive to the Internet. IndieWire writers also earned nominations for individual accolades in eight categories.

After winning the award for Best Criticism of TV last year, IndieWire’s Deputy TV Editor and TV Critic Ben Travers is a finalist in the category again for a number of his reviews, including his piece, “‘I Think You Should Leave’ Season 3 Is the Song of the Summer.”
IndieWire’s Digital Director, Christian Blauvelt, has another repeat nominee, this year in the category of Obituary/Appreciation — Film/TV Personalities for the story, “Ryan O’Neal Dead at 82: A Heartthrob Who Surrendered Himself Completely to Great Directors”
IndieWire’s VP, Features Strategy, Chris O’Falt, shares his nomination with Features Writer, Crafts & Special Projects, Jim Hemphill, as well as video producer Trevor Wallace. They’re collectively nominated in the category of Entertainment Reporting for “Deep Dive: George & Tammy.” This team has also been nominated in the category of Multimedia Package for “‘Risk Fuels Me’: Writer/Director Chloe Domont on Her Explosive ‘Fair Play’.”
Chris and Trevor are also finalists in the category of Regular Podcasts alongside IndieWire’s Craft & Special Projects Writer Sarah Shachat for their work on “How ‘Barbie’ Became Real.” For their work in promoting this piece, IndieWire’s Senior Social Media Manager, Veronica Flores, as well as Senior Social and Culture Editor Vincent Perella, have been nominated in the category of Best Use of Social Media to Enhance and/or Cover a Story by a Group.
For his piece, “Nobody Thought to Update the ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ Rights for the Streaming Age,” IndieWire’s Executive Editor, News, Tony Maglio, has been honored with a nom in the category of Entertainment News — Film/Broadcast.
Last, but certainly not least, sharing in the abundance, IndieWire’s Deputy Editor, Film, Ryan Lattanzio, is nominated in the category of Personality Profile — Film/TV Personalities for his piece, “Mia Wasikowska Isn’t Returning to Hollywood Any Time Soon.”
The 2024 Southern California Journalism Awards will be announced at an awards dinner gala at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, June 23.
