Julia Pickard, artist and advocate, dead at 78

A well-known visual artist and community advocate, who made Newfoundland her home for almost 40 years, has died.

Julia Pickard, 78, was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1936 and died in St. John's on Tuesday.

During her career, Pickard exhibited extensively in both solo and group shows in Canada and in Europe.

She also lent her time to numerous charitable organizations and groups as an art adjudicator, teacher, mentor and volunteer.

Pickard also served as chair of the Arts and Letters Awards Committee for many years, and sat as a board member of the LSPU Hall, Eastern Edge Gallery and The Rooms.

Came to Canada 1962

In 1959, she graduated from the Glasgow School of Art and received a post-graduate degree in Art Education from the Limerick School of Art.

Emigrating to Canada in 1962, she did post-graduate studies in Toronto, Oakville and finally, in St. John's.

Pickard moved to the capital city in 1976, and nine years later, became a Canadian citizen.

Her funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in St. John's.
