Kansas Jayhawks’ Dickinson, McCullar earn first-team all-Big 12 honors from AP

Kansas Jayhawks seniors Hunter Dickinson and Kevin McCullar on Tuesday earned first-team All-Big 12 honors from the Associated Press.

The recognition comes two days after Dickinson and McCullar received the same honor from the league’s men’s basketball coaches.

Dickinson and AP player of the year Jamal Shead were unanimous first-team selections in voting conducted among a 17-member panel of media that cover the conference on a regular basis. McCullar and a pair of Texas Longhorns — Max Abmas and Dylan Disu — also were named to the AP’s first team.

The second team consists of Houston’s L.J. Cryer, Baylor’s RayJ Dennis, Texas Tech’s Pop Isaacs, Iowa State’s Tamin Lipsey and TCU’s Emanuel Miller.

KU’s Dickinson was named the Big 12’s newcomer of the year and Houston’s Kelvin Sampson coach of the year.

Shead received 16 votes for player of the year to Dickinson’s one. Dickinson received 15 votes for top newcomer. Abmas received the other two votes.

Sampson received nine votes for coach of the year to Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger’s six. Texas Tech’s Grant McCasland and BYU’s Mark Pope each received one vote.

Dickinson was also named Tuesday to the 2023-24 Sporting News All-America second team.

Dickinson and McCullar will miss the Big 12 tournament because of injuries. KU coach Bill Self said Monday that both are expected to be ready to play in next week’s NCAA Tournament.

KU will open the Big 12 tourney against Cincinnati at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.
