The Last of Us spoilers follow.

The Last of Us's Nick Offerman has revealed that he was "taken aback" by the response to his episode in the series.

Offerman appeared in the standalone episode 'Long Long Time' of the apocalyptic series, which followed the story of survivalist Bill who develops a romantic relationship with a man named Frank after he stumbles into his post-apocalyptic compound.

The episode struck a chord with viewers, as we watched Bill and Frank's relationship develop over the years before ending in heartbreak as the pair decide to end their lives together after Frank discovers he is terminally ill.

Speaking about the role in an interview with The Guardian, Offerman revealed that he had been surprised by the "Game of Thrones-level tsunami of approbation" the episode received from fans and critics alike.

"Megan [Mullally, his wife and Will & Grace actress] said she was going to start calling me 'Episode Three Offerman'," he added.

The actor previously revealed that he had been unsure about taking the role due to a scheduling conflict before Mullally insisted he go for it after reading the script.

"There was nothing to do but to ask Megan to read it," he explained of the decision making process.

"Because my options were either to say: 'Honey, I just read a very good script that's going to screw up the calendar for a month', or say, 'Will you please read this and let me know what you think?' She read it and said: ‘Sorry buddy, you're going to Calgary to shoot this show."

Following the universal acclaim of season one, The Last of Us was unsurprisingly renewed for a second season. However, production is currently on hold due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strikes.

Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, the series follows the story of the video game of the same name as humans struggle to survive after the spread of fungal virus.

The Last of Us airs on HBO in the US, and on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK.
