Lawyer Max Spiegelman, Miami High and UM alum, dies at 88. He was ‘cherished’ by community
Max Spiegelman, a “cherished” Pinecrest native with decades of law experience and an avid sports fan, died peacefully Sunday. He was 88.
Spiegelman graduated from Miami Senior High School, the University of Florida and the University of Miami. He played football in high school so well that he was inducted into the Miami High Hall of Fame. He then practiced law with his brother Bob for over 45 years, according to his notice of death obtained by the Miami Herald.
“A true gentleman with the highest morals and values, he lived life to the fullest and earned the respect of everyone fortunate enough to know him,” says the notice, which also describes him as “devoted family man and cherished member of the community.”
The funeral service will take place at noon Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels at Mount Nebo/Kendall Memorial Gardens, located at 5900 SW 77 Ave, Miami, FL 33143.
After law school, Spiegelman married his wife Gail on June 6, 1959. They went on to cultivate a 64-year-old marriage and a large family, featuring three sons and 11 grandchildren.
Spiegelman wasn’t merely considered a part of the community because he was born and raised in Miami. He also was known for being an original ticket holder for the Dolphins and the Heat, as well as a fan of the University of Miami Hurricanes teams.
His love of sports also led to him becoming a blackjack expert; a bridge, tennis and golf player; and a youth sports coach.
Max Spiegelman was the second of four sons of Esther and Nathan Spiegelman. He is survived by his wife Gail; his sons Gary, Larry, Marc and their partners; his eleven grandchildren; and his brother Guy.
Donations in Max Spiegelman’s memory can be made to a 2024 Bounce Back from Cancer fund led by Marc Spiegelman, one of his sons. The initiative raises money for the Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute.
