Snow, black ice threaten another tricky morning commute in Ontario

Thursday’s winter storm brought a little bit of everything to southern Ontario, with ice, snow, rain, and even a few claps of thunder as the system moved through. Thousands of people lost power at the height of the storm, and slick roads led to multiple wrecks throughout the day Thursday.

Ontario’s wintry threat isn’t quite done just yet, and hazardous conditions will continue into Friday for parts of the province.

The winter storm brought accumulating snow north and east of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with communities to the south and west witnessing a crust of ice on exposed surfaces as a result of freezing rain.

Precipitation will slowly wind down from west to east through Friday morning, and impacts will continue through the morning commute.

Additional snowfall accumulations of 5-10 cm are possible north of the GTA, with up to 25 cm yet to fall across eastern Ontario, where the snow will continue into Friday morning.

With temperatures hovering around or just below the freezing mark, the threat for black ice will make for a slippery Friday morning commute.

Look ahead: Lake-effect snow develops, eyeing another potent storm next week

Southwesterly winds behind our departing winter storm will lead to bands of lake-effect snow developing off of Lake Erie and Lake Huron. These bands will ramp up on Friday evening, affecting the Niagara Peninsula as well as portions of the Huron shores.

Forecasters are also watching the potential for another significant storm mid-to-late next week. Frigid weather is expected for Christmas, Boxing Day and beyond -- lasting through the final week of 2022.
