Marianne Limpert Team Championships swimmers take to the pool

Swimmers from across New Brunswick are gathering in Saint John this weekend to take part in the Marianne Limpert Team Championships.

The three day event is hosted by a different city in the province each year and this time around, it's being held at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre.

About 350 participants have registered, making it the biggest swim meet the city has ever hosted.

Event manager Gary Losier says the sport is becoming even more popular in the province.

"Swimming for New Brunswick is very healthy," he said. "I think it's over 1,500 swimmers, 1,200 swimmers enrolled in different clubs over New Brunswick."

The Marianne Limpert Team Championships is important for swimmers looking to make qualifying times for the East Coast Swim Meet, and for coaches keeping an eye on future members of Team New Brunswick.

Losier says it's proving popular with the crowds too.

"Like I said, this is the biggest meet that we've had at this age level, so it just shows that this is a good size of crowd for this event," he said.
