Melissa Etheridge pokes fun at Todd Haley, Matt Cassel in new song about Chiefs

Actors Henry Winkler and Morgan Freeman have become Chiefs fans in recent years thanks to the incredible play of quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

That’s helped grow the ranks of celebrity Chiefs fans, but one person on that list has been supporting the team for decades. It’s Emmy Award-winning singer/songwriter Melissa Etheridge, who grew up in Leavenworth.

While Etheridge, 62, has loved the recent success in the Patrick Mahomes Era, she’s also seen some really bad Chiefs teams through the years.

But she’s always supported the team. Etheridge has performed the national anthem at Arrowhead Stadium and has sung multiple songs about the Chiefs.

This week, she debuted a new tune called, “I Loved The Chiefs Before They Were Cool.” Etheridge performed the song this week on “Good Morning Football” on the NFL Network, and the lyrics poke fun at Todd Haley and Matt Cassel.

Etheridge also mentions Marty Schottenheimer, Dick Vermeil, Andy Reid, Jamaal Charles, Isiah Pacheco, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Oh, and there’s a message for Swifties who are fans of Kelce’s girlfriend, singer Taylor Swift.

Here is part of the song...

“Well, I loved the Chiefs before they were cool

“Every Sunday morning I was acting like a fool

“But lately nowadays, it seems I need to say

“I loved the Chiefs before they were cool

“Long ago just to find them on TV used to be such a hassle

“Sitting through a game and then they’d go and blow it with Todd Haley and Matt Cassel

“There were times where we had a little hope, like the years with Jamaal and Priest Holmes

“And then some years were just a little finer with Dick Vermeil and Marty Schottenheimer

“You see, there’s so much more than just more Mahomes and Kelce

“Yeah, that’s the one that’s Taylor’s boyfriend too, yeah

“There’s coach Reid, Rashee Rice and Pacheco and our defense is really, really, really, really good

“So all you Swifties, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride, just as long as we’re clear between you and I

“That I loved the Chiefs before they were cool.”
