Heat adds two familiar faces to two-ways, promotes Orlando Robinson, signs Jaime Jaquez Jr.

Instead of allocating two of its three two-way deals to undrafted rookies, the Miami Heat on Saturday opted to give those contracts to a pair of young veterans and familiar faces: guards Dru Smith and Jamaree Bouyea, who both played briefly for the team last season.

Meanwhile, the Heat is moving developmental center Orlando Robinson to a standard NBA contract at a minimum salary to make him part of its 15-man roster for next season. The 22-year-old Robinson, who went undrafted last year out of Fresno State, closed this past season on a two-way deal with the Heat.

The Heat also signed first-round pick Jaime Jaquez Jr. on Saturday, meaning he cannot be traded for 30 days.

Jaquez’s four-year rookie scale contract is projected to be worth about $17 million (120 percent of the rookie scale amount, which is standard). He’s scheduled to make $3.5 million this upcoming season, $3.7 million in 2024-25, $3.9 million in 2025-26 and $5.9 million in 2026-27, and the third and fourth seasons are teams options in rookie deals.

Players on two-way contracts can be replaced at any time, so this does not assure that Smith and Bouyea will be on two-way contracts when the regular season begins.

But it does reflect the Heat’s desire to invest more time in them, as Smith and Bouyea signed their new two-way deals with Miami on Saturday.

Smith, a 6-3 combo guard, appeared in five games for the Heat and 10 games for the Nets last season. He spent time with both organizations on two-way contracts and also played for the Heat’s G-League team in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

For the Heat, Smith scored 11 points on 5 for 14 shooting, with five assists, one turnover, four steals and three blocks, in 67 minutes in five games and one start.

For the Nets, he scored 33 points, with 17 assists, 15 rebounds, six steals, a block and two turnovers in his 91 minutes over 10 appearances.

He shot a combined 18 for 45 from the field (40 percent) in his 10 NBA games and 5 for 19 (26.3 percent) on threes.

Smith was undrafted out of Missouri in 2021; he was first team All SEC in his final college season.

Bouyea, undrafted out of San Francisco last June, played on 10-day contracts for the Heat and Washington last season, and also played for the Heat’s G-League team in South Dakota.

A 6-2 combo guard, Bouyea had 15 points, four assists and four turnovers in 65 minutes over four games for the Heat, shooting 6 for 13 from the field. He played six minutes in one appearance for the Wizards, missing his only shot.

The Heat previously extended qualifying offers to forward Jamal Cain and Robinson to make them restricted free agents after both ended this past season on two-way contracts with the Heat.

Robinson is being promoted to the 15-man roster. Cain remains a restricted free agent, but could end up back on a two-way contract or could be signed to a standard deal.

Teams can carry as many as three two-way contracts this season, up from two in past seasons. Players on two-way deals can appear in as many as 50 games during the regular season but are ineligible for the playoffs.

With Robinson signing a standard contract, the Heat’s 15-man roster for next season is up to 13 players. Two of the Heat’s three two-way contract slots are now occupied.

Bouyea is on the Heat’s summer league team that opened practice in Sacramento on Saturday in advance of summer league games there and in Las Vegas over the next two weeks. Smith was not with the Heat group that traveled to California.

Cain and Robinson will play for the Heat’s summer league team for the second straight year. Jaquez will make his summer league debut for the Heat next week in Sacramento.

Three players (Nikola Jovic, Jaquez and Robinson) who are on track to be on the Heat’s 15-man roster this upcoming season are on the Heat’s summer league team.

The Heat opens summer league action on Monday against the Los Angeles Lakers’ summer squad in Sacramento (6 p.m., ESPN 2).
