More severe weather in Texas forecast as police confirm officer's death from tornado

Texas residents in areas including Austin, San Antonio and Houston faced another round of severe weather alerts on Saturday afternoon and into Sunday morning, after a week of storms, floods and tornadoes battering the state.

Forecasters said residents in Austin and San Antonio should prepare for severe thunderstorms Saturday capable of producing large hail, damaging winds and an isolated tornadoes in the area between 4 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to the National Weather Service.

A flood watch also remained in effect for the Houston area. Meteorologist have predicted that there will be showers and thunderstorms Saturday evening into Sunday afternoon. One to three inches of rainfall are expected through the weekend. Flooding is expected in creeks, rivers and streams, as well as other low lying locations within urban areas, the NWS said.

North and Central Texas can expect scattered storms to develop in the early afternoon Saturday and advance into heavy rainfall towards the night. Flash flooding, strong winds and hail and lightning will occur in the area, the NWS said.

In addition, heavy rainfall can cause flash flooding overnight, the agency said.

Texans are encouraged to shelter in place if the storm approaches their area. When venturing outside, everyone should stay weather aware and have their devices handy to receive additional weather warnings, the agency said.

Last weekend, a severe storm spawned tornadoes in the Houston metro area, injuring two people and dropping about a foot of rain. The severe weather alert lasted four days, with storms causing widespread flooding and over 1,000 reports of damaged buildings and homes.

Officer of 22 years killed at home in Texas tornado

Police in Conroe, Texas confirmed Friday that Lt. James “Jimmy” Waller died after being hospitalized for several days while battling injuries he sustained when a tornado struck his home earlier this week.

The Conroe Police Department made the announcement on Friday in a Facebook post.

“As you are aware, Jimmy was a fighter and he fought hard to the end.” the police department wrote. “After multiple surgeries, physicians determined that his injuries were too great to sustain life. His family members were able to spend time with him prior to his passing.”

Waller suffered critical injuries after a tornado hit his home Sunday in Trinity County, about 100 miles north of Houston. Lt. Waller's wife also suffered injuries but the Conroe Police Department told USA TODAY that she is recovering.

The police department asked for the community to keep the Waller family in their prayers and posted a GoFundMe to provide help for the family.

At the time of publication, the GoFundMe for the Waller family raised nearly $30,000 of their set $20,000 goal.
