Natasha 'Carla' Abogado case: Mistrial for officer accused of striking teen

A judge has declared a mistrial in the case of a York Regional Police officer charged in the death of an 18-year-old girl, who was struck after she stepped off a Toronto bus more than two years ago.

The jury had been deliberating for about a day, but said Wednesday that they were deadlocked.

The judge discharged the jurors and thanked them for their service.

Carla Abogado was struck and killed as she stepped off a bus at Warden Avenue and St. Clair Avenue East in February 2014.

She had left work and was just steps away from her family's home when she was struck.

Const. Remo Romano was later charged with dangerous driving causing death.

Abogado's family has also filed a $2.2-million lawsuit against York Regional Police.

Neither the Crown nor members of Abogado's family who were in court Wednesday would speak with reporters.

The judge set June 1 for a return to court to set a new trial date.
