Water main break closes some UNB, STU and NBCC buildings Monday

A water main break forced two buildings to close at the University of New Brunswick Fredericton and another building at nearby St. Thomas University on Monday.

Marshall d'Avray Hall, the Aitken Centre and the J.B O'Keefe Fitness Centre were all closed.

Vanier Hall at St. Thomas University and the hot-water supply at STU's George Martin hall were also affected.

The water main break happened inside the tunnel system by Marshall d'Avray Hall at around 2 a.m. Monday, said John Bigger, the associate vice-president of campus operations at UNB.

Crews have isolated the area of the problem, but water has filled the tunnel, Bigger said.

"We actually have a tunnel full of water that needs to be drained down before we can get in to assess."

Bigger is hopeful the buildings will be up and running on Tuesday but he won't know for certain until crews can get a closer look at the problem.

The water problem extended to the Fredericton campus of New Brunswick Community College, which cancelled classes for the day although water was eventually restored.

Jeffrey Carleton, a spokesperson for St. Thomas University, said residence services is also working with students living in Vanier Hall, which was also affected by the water main break.

He said residence services is providing washroom facilities in adjacent buildings.

In a news release, UNB said updates on the problem would be provided as they became available.
