Oprah Winfrey's Portrait Is Unveiled at the National Portrait Gallery — See the Stunning Painting

The Smithsonian Institute commissioned a portrait of Oprah Winfrey in recognition of her "significant contributions to American popular culture"

Oprah Winfrey is now on display at the National Portrait Gallery.

The star, 69, appeared at the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to celebrate the unveiling of her official portrait, currently on the museum's first floor.

A 6-feet-10-inches by 5-feet-8-inches portrait of Winfrey was commissioned for the museum's permanent collection by Chicago artist Shawn Michael Warren, according to a press release from the Smithsonian Institution. Warren's portrait depicts Winfrey posing in a full-length purple dress outside her California home.

"As a global media leader, philanthropist, producer, actor, author and entrepreneur, Winfrey has made significant contributions to American popular culture, which earned her a place in the National Portrait Gallery," a press release for the portrait's unveiling read.

“Through her rise to fame as host and producer of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah demonstrated an unparalleled ability to connect with people and inspire them to become the best versions of themselves,” National Portrait Gallery director Kim Sajet said in a statement.

“[Winfrey's] vision and spirit deserve recognition in the nation’s Portrait Gallery, and we are delighted to celebrate her with this commissioned portrait by Shawn Michael Warren, who has reflected her warmth and compassion in this painting," she added.

Winfrey has been out promoting the upcoming movie musical adaptation of The Color Purple, which she worked on as an executive producer. She starred as Sofia in the original 1985 movie by Steven Spielberg in her film debut.

"Gratitude really is my religion," Winfrey tells PEOPLE in this week's cover story. She adds that her performance as Sofia in the original Color Purple movie "changed everything" for her. "It was a spiritual opening for me to see my life in a different way."

As Winfrey nears her 70th birthday in January, she tells PEOPLE she still believes her lifelong purpose is to uplift others.

"I still continue to rise, and I’m in a space now where my offering is to help other people to rise," she says. "The principle that is the underbelly, the cornerstone for how I operate in the world. … Life is better when you share it."

The Color Purple is in theaters Christmas Day.
