Peabody to seek seat on AMO board county caucus

BROCKTON – With the 2024 Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference scheduled for Ottawa Aug. 18-21 – AMO’s 125th anniversary – council is arranging delegations (meetings with provincial officials).

Mayor Chris Peabody has already announced his plans to run for the AMO board’s county caucus.

Coun. Tim Elphick said he would like to “have a further conversation with the solicitor general” regarding the new detachment boards for municipal policing. “[They’ve] proven problematic already,” he told council, “where the detachment boards been unable to find a sufficient … insurance provider to capture the insurance liability for a detachment board … which has now caused the detachment board to go into hiatus where they are unable to meet … unable to administer any contracts now for policing and delayed significantly any oversight whatsoever for those policing relationships we once held in the municipality on our own. That’s certainly problematic from my perspective.” He added that there are still a lot of “unknowns,” and he continues to have concerns about this model of board.

“That is very concerning,” said Peabody.

Coun. Carl Kuhnke also proposed a meeting with Ontario Solicitor General Michael Kerzner, to discuss another matter, a previous request for additional mental health resources. Kuhnke said that to his knowledge, the municipality hasn’t heard back about the matter.

Kuhnke also made reference to “our standing delegation with the minister of health (Sylvia Jones), to “further the case for rural health care … that we’re not getting, unfortunately,” and also with the minister of labour (David Piccini) regarding skills and training in rural areas. Referring to the latter, Kuhnke spoke of Bruce Power, and the local growth in residential and institutional construction.

Peabody added Neil Lumsden (recreation) to the list, to lobby on the new $200 million arena grant fund.

Deputy Mayor James Lang commented that there are other things in the recreation file to ask for, too, including the trail system.
