Female pedestrian dies after being struck by a vehicle in north Toronto

A female pedestrian is dead after being struck by a vehicle in north Toronto early this morning.

Police were called to the scene at Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue West just after 5:30 a.m., where a female pedestrian was found lying in the street. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

They say a fuel tanker was making a right turn at the intersection when it struck the woman, who appears to be in her 20s, and kept driving southbound.

"He was stopped by one of the witness vehicles and brought back to the scene," said Const. Hugh Smith. "He might not have even known that he struck her, especially with the weight of that vehicle."

Smith says they are now interviewing the fuel truck driver.

The intersection is closed for the investigation and is expected to stay that way for another couple of hours.

This is the third pedestrian to be struck and killed by a vehicle in the GTA this week. A 25-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run in Scarborough on Tuesday and a 21-year-old man was killed in another hit-and-run in Brampton on Wednesday.
