The show is set in the Gotham City cinematic universe created by filmmaker Matt Reeves in “The Batman,” which is getting its own film sequel. “The Penguin” rounds out the mob crew alluded to in the film, with Cristin Milioti playing Sofia Falcone, the daughter of John Turturro’s late character Carmine Falcone. The Falcone crime family also includes Scott Cohen and Michael Zegen, whose character Alberto becomes the Holiday Killer in the “Batman” comics.

Clancy Brown plays Gotham City mafia head Salvatore Maroni, a character who was formerly portrayed by Eric Roberts in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight.”

The “Penguin” cast also includes “Emily the Criminal” breakout Theo Rossi, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, James Madio, and Carmen Ejogo.

“The Penguin” is developed by showrunner/writer Lauren LeFranc, with “The Batman” writer/director Reeves executive producing along with Farrell, LeFranc, Dylan Clark, Bill Carraro, and Daniel Pipski. Reeves’ 6th & Idaho Productions and Dylan Clark Productions are behind the show in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Reeves and 6th & Idaho are under an overall deal.

“Mare of Easttown” alum Craig Zobel directs the first three episodes of “The Penguin.” He also executive produces.

Farrell recently told MovieZine just how “dark” the limited series’ tone is.

“It’s dark, that’s what I can tell you about it. It’s really dark. It’s really heavy, I think — it certainly was doing it,” he said. “Which is not to say I didn’t have fun, I had an amazing time doing it. It’s incredibly violent. It’s one man’s rise to what he’s always dreamed of inhabiting, which is a certain power or social status.”

“The Penguin” premieres in September 2024 on Max. Check out the trailer below.

The first teaser for DC’s “The Penguin” came out in March. While Max is referring to them both as “teasers,” they are trailer length — especially the new one.
