Penn State wrestling loses Shayne Van Ness for season due to injury. ‘He’ll be sorely missed’

Penn State wrestling will be without one of its starters for the rest of the season.

Shayne Van Ness, who wrestles at 149 pounds, will be out the rest of the season, according to Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson.

Sanderson delivered the news Tuesday afternoon during his weekly media availability.

“Unfortunately he’s had issues with something, and it’s just kind of gotten tough,” Sanderson said. “Kind of got tweaked again in practice and made the decision for him to get it repaired and get ready for next year. Obviously he’ll be sorely missed.”

Van Ness, who finished third at nationals last season, did not wrestle Sunday against Lehigh, when freshman Tyler Kasak took the mat for the Nittany Lions at 149 pounds. Kasak could be in line to start in his place the rest of the way, as could Connor Pierce or David Evans.

“(Kasak) has some potential there,” Sanderson said. “We have some kids that obviously can step in there and compete at 149. Him and Evans and Connor Pierce, these are all really good kids that work really hard and are ready to compete.”

The Nittany Lions will next take the mat Sunday for their dual with Hofstra at Rec Hall.
