Postpone your plans to cross Hummel Bridge

Prepare for inconvenience, because as of Friday, May 31st, at 9 a.m. the Hummel Bridge will be closed to vehicles. You can still walk across it, but there will be no driving to the other side, and so it shall remain until further notice.

Hummel Bridge is a boundary bridge between the Township of Nipissing and Powassan. You can find it on the north side of Hemlock Road coming off McCarthy Street. Google Maps often identifies Hemlock as Tamarack Road, so be wary of that. Also, when you’re heading West from Powassan on Highway 534, take a turn down Alsace Road. That too leads to the bridge.

Just don’t drive over that bridge.

Last week, HP Engineering inspected the bridge, and the engineer recommended the bridge be closed to all vehicles. All public services such as O.P.P., EMS, school buses, and the Ministry of Transportation have all been alerted of the closure.

So explained Nipissing Township’s Fire Chief Will Bateman, who reached out to BayToday to help spread the word of the closure. He noted there are about 15 houses along that stretch, and those people will be directly affected, as will many more who use the route. “Property owners from both municipalities have received notices,” the Chief explained.

Both the Township and the Municipality of Powassan are also posting detour signs, to aid residents and Sunday drivers alike. Hemlock Road will also be closed at both entrances and available only for local traffic.

As mentioned, the bridge is closed indefinitely. It’s not clear when people can it expect it to reopen. However, Chief Bateman said that the Township and Municipality both have meetings next Tuesday to discuss the bridge, “and more information will be communicated as it comes available.”

Chief Bateman also noted that those with questions can reach out to him at 705-752-2772 or by e-mail at firechief@nipissingtownship.com.
