Previewing matchups for high school football playoff games in the Rock Hill region

Five classes with 32 teams apiece. More than 150 teams will be vying for a state championship ring as the South Carolina High School League’s state playoffs open this weekend. All games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday unless otherwise noted.

Spartanburg (5-5) at Rock Hill (6-4)

A second-place finish in the region earned Rock Hill a first-round home game. The Bearcats are coming off a 58-21 loss to Clover in the regular-season finale and head into a matchup with a Spartanburg team which snapped a three-game losing streak with a 35-14 win against Dorman last week. Rock Hill’s explosive offense is averaging more than 35 points per game. This game will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Laurens (2-8) at Northwestern (9-1)

The Region 3-4A champs stretched their winning streak to nine with a 52-10 win against Catawba Ridge last week. Northwestern begins its upper state championship-defending campaign against a Laurens team that saw a two-game win streak snapped with a 36-34 loss to Eastside last week. The Trojans have outscored their opponents by an average of 40 points during their nine-game winning streak.

Eastside (6-4) at South Pointe (7-3)

With a 38-7 win against York last week, South Pointe locked up second place in the region and a home playoff game. The Stallions bring a stellar defense allowing less than 20 points per game against an Eastside team which has won six of its past eight games.

Woodmont (5-5) at Clover (8-2)

Clover extended its winning streak to eight games with a region-clinching win against Rock Hill last week. The Blue Eagles bring an offense led by running back Landon Stone (1,903 rushing yards, 17 touchdowns) against a Woodmont team that snapped a four-game losing streak with a 34-21 win against Mauldin last week.

Hillcrest (8-2) at Nation Ford (5-5)

Nation Ford secured a first-round home playoff game with last week’s 27-13 win over Fort Mill last week. Now the Falcons host a Hillcrest team that has lost two of its past three games after starting the season 7-0.

Fort Mill (2-8) at T.L. Hanna (9-1)

Fort Mill’s first trip to the postseason since 2017 will see the Yellow Jackets travel to Anderson to face the No. 2 5A team in the state in a T.L. Hanna team that was scored 30 or more points in all but one game this season.

York (7-3) at Riverside (5-5)

York ended its regular season on a two-game losing streak and looks to get back in the win column as the Cougars travel to Greer to face a Riverside team that has lost four of its past six games.

Indian Land (6-4) at Greer (5-5)

Indian Land picked up a 25-22 win against Lancaster in its season finale last week and heads west to face a Greer team that has won each of its past four games by double digits.

Lancaster (1-9) at Ridge View (8-2)

Lancaster enters the postseason with an at-large bid on the lower state side of the Class 4A bracket, and the Bruins will make the trip down to Columbia to face a Ridge View team that is riding a three-game win streak following last week’s 28-7 win against A.C. Flora.

Powdersville (5-5) at Chester (8-2)

Chester is coming off a bye as it prepares for its postseason run against a Powdersville team that has won three of its last four games. These two teams met in Greenville in the second round of the playoffs last year, with Powdersville taking a 42-12 victory en route to a state championship appearance.

Ridgeland-Hardeeville (5-5) at Andrew Jackson (7-3)

For the second year in a row, Andrew Jackson will host Ridgeland-Hardeeville in the first round of the Class 2A state playoffs. The Volunteers won last year’s contest, 66-26. Andrew Jackson enters the game as winners of seven of its past eight games, while the Jaguars ended their season on a two-game winning streak.

Calhoun Falls Charter (3-7) at Lewisville (9-1)

The Lions won their region after a 58-7 win against McBee to close the season, and open the postseason against a Calhoun Falls team that has lost six of its past seven games following last week’s 49-28 loss to Dixie.
