Prince George showed off his royal handshake before his dad at the Rugby World Cup

Prince George is stepping up to his royal role.

The 10-year-old prince accompanied his father, Prince William, to France on Oct. 14 to support Wales in the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals. William is not only the patron of the Welsh Rugby Union but also currently the Prince of Wales, the title traditionally held by the heir to the British throne — and George, who is next in the line of succession, will likely hold the same title someday.

Behind the scenes of the match, Prince George and Prince William met those with connections to the Welsh rugby team. Not only did Prince George show off his royal handshake — a move he's mastered over the years — but Prince William allowed his son to take the lead and be the first to shake hands. Knowing just what to do, Prince George confidently approached a man and shook his hand as the introduction was made. He then stood by and smiled as Prince William started chatting.

A video of the sweet moment, showing how Prince George is preparing for life in the public eye, was shared on TikTok by a royals fan site and has amassed over 3 million views!

When it comes to handshakes, Kate Middleton is an expert on royal etiquette. The Princess of Wales is conscious of making sure her husband, as the future monarch, leads the way during royal events when they attend together, including letting him shake hands first.

In a video that resurfaced on TikTok over the summer, Princess Kate and Prince William visited the Foundling Museum — which tells the story of the 18th-century Foundling Hospital, the U.K.'s first children's charity — in 2022. In the clip, Kate is seen approaching their greeters first. However, she makes small talk while she hangs back and waits for William to make his way over. Prince William is then the first to exchange handshakes with the greeters, and Kate then follows his lead.

"She’s never trying to outshine him in any way,” royal biographer Penny Junor previously told PEOPLE. "I think that Kate is a bit like Prince Philip supporting the Queen. She doesn’t outshine William but still has a lot to say herself."

The Prince of Wales often returns the favor and plays the role of the supportive spouse, letting Princess Kate take center stage at events where she is the patron of the organization or highlighting a cause close to her heart.

At Wimbledon this summer, Prince William joined his wife — along with Prince George and Princess Charlotte — at the men's finals. Because Kate is the patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, William fell back and let her take the lead as they met staff, volunteers and players.

While Prince William supports Wales in rugby, Princess Kate is a fan of England. She traveled to France the day after her husband and their son to attend England's quarterfinal match, where she heard about the fun Prince George had the day before.

"He took full advantage," Princess Kate said in a behind-the-scenes clip that @RoyallyBelle_ shared on X. According to the fan blog, Kate told rugby legend Sir Bill Beaumont CBE her eldest child enjoyed the pizza!

The World Rugby chairman replied, “He tucked into the pizza alright.”

“Yes, I know, I did hear that," Princess Kate said with a laugh.
