Prince William and Prince Harry to Appear Separately at Event in Late Mother Princess Diana's Name

The Prince of Wales and the Duke of Sussex will both honor recipients at the Diana Legacy Awards on Thursday night

Prince Harry and Prince William are supporting a common cause: praising the young people who have gone the extra mile in the name of their late mother, Princess Diana.

But the estranged brothers are set to appear separately at the Diana Award legacy event in London on Thursday night.

The Prince of Wales, 41, is making a speech and handing out awards to young people at the event, while the Duke of Sussex, 39, will chat with those honored in a video meeting later on.

The glittering occasion at London's Science Museum sees the Diana Award, the only charitable organization that carries her name, awarding 20 of its cohort of young people as Legacy Award winners. The award marks the charity’s 25^th anniversary. The Diana Award was set up two years after the royal died following a car crash in 1997.

Prince William is attending the event solo amid his wife Kate Middleton's continued recovery from her planned abdominal surgery on Jan. 16.

Later, once the main event has concluded, Prince Harry will chat with the young people from his home in California. The Diana Award told PEOPLE that Harry "will be a key part of our Legacy Awards celebration, which takes place over the course of this week. He is scheduled to speak with the award recipients virtually the same evening of the Awards to celebrate their accomplishments.”

Tessy Ojo, CEO of the Diana Award, added to PEOPLE, “It’s a privilege to have the support of both The Prince of Wales and The Duke of Sussex, particularly as we mark our 25th anniversary year."

Last year, the brothers also took part in an occasion honoring the young changemakers chosen by the Diana Award. Prince Harry attended an event and took part in a Q&A in Los Angeles, while Prince William recorded a video message.

"What unites them is their courage, compassion and a relentless dedication to improving the lives of others," William said at the time. "Today, we recognize the power of all young people — the power to challenge the status quo, to confront injustice and to inspire meaningful change."

On Thursday evening, Prince William "will meet key staff and supporters of the Diana Award, before joining the ceremony where he will hear about the recipients’ work, make a short speech and present Legacy Awards to this year’s winners," his office at Kensington Palace said.

This year's winners of the Legacy Awards have come from around the world, including the U.S., Australia, Bangladesh, the Cayman Islands, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Romania, the UAE and the U.K.

The palace added that the award "celebrates the achievements of 20 exceptional young leaders who are inspiring the next generation to follow in Diana, Princess of Wales’ footsteps and make a positive difference to the world."

It comes after a testing week for William and his wife Kate, 42, who issued an apology on Monday following the release of the Mother's Day image that was pulled by multiple news agencies due to suspicions of manipulation. Hours later, she was photographed in the backseat of a car with Prince William leaving Windsor Castle. 

"Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing, Kate wrote in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter). "I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother's Day."

Her apology for the photo — which featured her three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5 — was signed with a “C” for Catherine.
