Today, just as Prince Harry landed in London to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III named Harry's brother, Prince William, the colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps. While the news doesn't officially take effect for a few days, with a ceremony set for May 13 at the Army Aviation Centre in Middle Wallop, royal fans noted a connection between the new appointment and Harry's time in the military.

“His Majesty the King will officially hand over the role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales,” the palace’s statement read. “In August 2023, following His Majesty’s Accession, the King was pleased to announce military appointments including that the Prince of Wales would become Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps. The role was previously held by His Majesty the King, as Prince of Wales, for 31 years."

Williams's new appointment puts him in charge of Harry's former unit. In 2008, Harry passed his Army Air Corps "Grading" and Pilot’s Selection Board interview and then went on to train as an Army Air Corps pilot in 2009.

"On successful completion of that Army Pilots Course, Prince Harry was selected to train on the Apache Attack Helicopter," stated Harry's official biography before he was removed from the official royal family website. "On the same day, it was announced that Prince Harry received his provisional wings from his father." Charles was colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps at the time, making the ceremony extra meaningful for Harry.

Before Harry stepped away from his role as a senior royal, he held two distinctions for his military service: Captain General of the Royal Marines, Honorary Air Commandant of Royal Air Force Honington, and Commodore-in-Chief, Small Ships and Diving, Royal Naval Command. After March 2020, the titles reverted to the crown, which is why Harry wasn't wearing his military uniform at Queen Elizabeth's funeral in 2022.

Back in 2023, when King Charles was shuffling around titles for members of the royal family, Kate Middleton also got a few new roles. The Princess of Wales became the Commodore-in-Chief of the Fleet Air Arm, Colonel-in-Chief of the 1st Queen’s Dragoon Guards, and Royal Honorary Air Commodore of Royal Air Force Coningsby. People notes that Kate was especially touched by the last title, as her grandfather served in the Royal Air Force.
