Prolific Quebec photographer dies of heart attack

Quebec landscape photographer Heiko Wittenborn has died of a heart attack at the age of 59.

Wittenborn, who immigrated to Canada from Germany in the 1970s, banked more than 50,000 photos of Quebec and its northern Nunavik region during his nearly 20-year professional photography career.

He died at his Montreal home Saturday.

Wittenborn discovered the province's north in the 1990s. Its landscapes and people became a large part of his extensive portfolio.

Three books of his images have been published. His photographs have also appeared in many national and regional publications.

A memorial service for Wittenborn will be held on Friday in Montreal.
