Racial slur on campaign sign investigated by RCMP

RCMP on P.E.I. are looking into whether a racial slur scrawled across a P.E.I. election campaign sign qualifies as a hate crime.

The offensive word was written on the sign of NDP candidate Jacqueline Tuplin, who is running for the NDP in District 23, Tyne Valley-Linkletter.

The sign has been taken down, and Tuplin said she has put the incident behind her, but the RCMP are still looking into it.

"As part of the investigation we'll certainly be looking into the definition of a hate crime, the word that was actually used on the sign, and see if it falls within the confines of the definition," said RCMP Sgt. Leanne Butler.

In a video statement about the incident, Tuplin said she has had a positive experience going door to door during the campaign, and she was saddened by the act.
