Trains running through Surrey and Sussex are returning to normal after a morning of disruption due to a broken down freight train, rail operators have said.

Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink services were all disrupted until 12:00 GMT on Monday.

The freight train broke down between East Croydon and London Victoria but disruption affected services in the South East to and from the capital.

Gatwick Express services between London Victoria and Brighton, via Gatwick Airport, were among those suspended earlier.

Southern services between Reigate and Victoria and stopping services between Gatwick and Victoria were also cancelled, as well as services from Eastbourne and Epsom.

Trains between Portsmouth Harbour/Bognor Regis and Victoria only ran as far as Gatwick Airport, the operator added.

Ticket acceptance was in place between Southern, Thameslink, South Western Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains during the disruption.

Passengers who arrived at their destination more than 15 minutes late will be entitled to compensation, operators said.
