Rare sea turtle nest found in Myrtle Beach, SC area. Here’s what kind and where it is

A rare kind of sea turtle nest was found on the beach at Huntington Beach State Park in the Murrells Inlet area, the South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts (SCUTE) posted on Facebook.

Kemp’s ridley normally nest in Mexico or Texas but occasionally make their way up to South Carolina, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. In 2023, there were over 6,000 sea turtle nests in South Carolina but only one was Kemp’s ridley, SCUTE said on Facebook. Last year’s clutch was found in Hilton Head.

This is the smallest sea turtle species and has been classified as endangered since 1970, according to the South Carolina DNR.
