“Since Day 1 at Real Sports, we’ve consistently tried to look beyond the scoreboard, and focus instead on the many societal issues inherent in the world of sports,” he said. “In the process we’ve had the opportunity to tell complex stories about race, gender, class, opportunity and so much more. The show has received a wowing 37 Sports Emmy Awards and three Peabodys, while Gumbel himself was the recipient of the Sports Emmys Lifetime Achievement award for 2022.

Some of the notable stories broken during his Real Sports tenure have included the exposing of a child slavery ring for sport, investigations into the International Olympic Committee, the police shooting of a teenager and Shaquille O’Neal’s revelation that he’s earned more yearly income from endorsements than his NBA career.

The host’s other credits include NBC’s GrandStand and Today, in addition to CBS’ The Early Show.
