Richland boys roll to 4A basketball quarterfinal win; Kamiakin girls fall to Davis

The Richland boys basketball team introduced itself to the Tacoma Dome crowd late Thursday night in impressive fashion.

Shooting a sizzling 69 percent from the floor, the Bombers found open shooters early and often en route to beating Kentwood 84-60 in a WIAA Class 4A boys state tournament quarterfinal game.

And if you take away their paltry 3-for-11 from 3-point land, Richland looks even more impressive by shooting 79 percent from the floor on 2-point field goals.

With the victory, the Bombers advance to the semifinals and play Glacier Peak at 9 p.m. Friday.

“Trying to play man-to-man defense against us, we knew it was going to be hard,” said Richland coach Earl Streufert. “The zone matchup wasn’t good for them either.”

Richland’s Lucas Westerfield (40) bats out the ball from Kentwood’s Jaevieon Jamerson (13) and Kentwood’s Yusof Edey (22) during the quarterfinals game of the Class 4A state tournament at the Tacoma Dome, on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, in Tacoma, Wash.

Jack Forbes led the way for Richland with 26 points and 2 blocked shots. But he had help.

“Jack was special to night,” added Streufert. “Over the last month, Jack has been playing so well for us.”

Luke Westerfield and Lance Horntvedt each added 18 points. Horntvedt, who grabbed 7 rebounds, was perfect from the floor — going 8-for-8, including 2-for-2 from the 3-point line.

Josh Woodard, normally the team’s scoring leader, was satisfied with 10 points and 9 assists.

The senior led the way in finding an open teammate all night.

In fact, the entire Bombers team did a great job of making that extra pass to a wide-open teammate for an easy layup all game. As a team, Richland was credited for an astounding 21 assists.

“They played super hard and shared the ball,” said Streufert. “Having 21 assists and shooting about 70 percent is pretty impressive. There were very few forced shots that we had.”

DAVIS 59, KAMIAKIN 48: Davis jumped out to a 17-10 first quarter lead and never looked back in upsetting the Braves in the quarterfinals in the Tacoma Dome.

“We handled their pressure better the last time we played them (in December),” said Kamiakin coach Lane Schumacher.

Pirates senior Esmeralda Galindo was outstanding for Davis, scoring 29 points and grabbing 5 steals. Davis freshman Cheyenne Hull added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

“Esmerelda was fantastic,” said Schumacher. “We tried every defense we had against them, and they handled everything. We picked the wrong day to play one of our worst games of the season.”

The Pirates will meet Gonzaga Prep in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Kamiakin was led by Emaunii Smith, who had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, as well as 7 assists.

Braves senior Nicole Wertenberger added 11 points, while Camia Howard scored 10 points.

Kamiakin is still alive to earn a trophy, and it will take on Woodinville at 10:30 a.m. Friday in a consolation game.

“Our goal is simple: we’re trying to play the last day of the season, which is Saturday,” said Schumacher.

GRANDVIEW 68, PROSSER 64: In a quarterfinal featuring familiar foes, the Greyhounds hung on to beat the Mustangs in the Yakima Valley SunDome.

This was the fourth time this season the neighborhood rivals met. The two teams split their regular season games, while Grandview won the district title game, and now this quarterfinal.

Grandview advances to the state semifinals and takes on North Kitsap at 9 p.m. Friday.

Prosser will play in a 2 p.m. consolation game Friday against Anacortes.

The game featured eight lead changes and nine other times the contest was tied.

Mavryk Bentley led the Greyhounds with 17 points and 6 rebounds; while Marcelino Armendariz added 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Two other Greyhounds were in double-figure scoring: Cameron Draculan had 14 points and 6 rebounds, while Levi Dorsett had 11 points.

Koby McClure led the Mustangs with 20 points and 8 rebounds, and Killian Phillips added 17 points. Kory McClure had 9 points and 10 rebounds.

PROSSER 57, W.F. WEST-CHEHALIS 41: Prosser has returned to another state semifinal game after the Mustangs rolled over W.F. West of Chehalis in Yakima on Thursday morning.

Prosser forced the Bearcats into 26 turnovers that turned into 27 points. Six different Mustangs also sank seven 3-point field goals in the contest.

Deidra Phillips scored 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead Prosser, while teammate Lay’lee Dixon added 14 points.

Freshman Herbie Wright scored 9 points, and she also had 4 assists and 6 steals.

Now, the Mustangs will play No. 1 Ellensburg in the semifinals at 3:45 p.m. on Friday. The Bulldogs beat White River 68-49 in their quarterfinal matchup and have not lost in three years.

This will be the fourth time Prosser and Ellensburg play each other, with the Bulldogs winning all three.

COLUMBIA-BURBANK 74, ADNA 68: Quincy Scott scored a game-high 27 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished off 4 assists to help lead the Coyotes over the Pirates in a quarterfinal game in Spokane.

Burbank needed all of Scott’s points. It led by as many as 21 points, but Adna rallied hard in the second half and got within 4 points.

That’s when Scott came up with a clutch play.

“Quincy made some huge shots,” said Coyotes coach Todd Schumacher. “That corner 3, when we were up 4, with about 2:30 to play. That gave us a 7-point lead. He’s a tough matchup. Two different guys who had to cover him each had four fouls tonight.”

But Schumacher gave Adna credit.

“Adna is a very underrated team because they just got their best player back (Braeden Salme) from a football injury about 10 games back,” said Schumacher. “We were up 21 points. But I had a feeling Adna would come back. Our offense at times led to some bad defensive stops. But a win’s a win.

“It’s the state tournament. It’s survive and advance.”

Tristan Frimodt added 18 points and 7 rebounds for Burbank, while Caden Ross had 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Salme led the Pirates with 24 points and 6 assists.

Now the Coyotes face Lake Roosevelt in the semifinals at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

The Raiders — who suffered their lone loss of the season a few weeks ago at Burbank — beat Toutle Lake 69-31 in the quarterfinals.

WARDEN 72, MABTON 64: There is a reason Warden senior Lauryn Madsen is considered one of the best girls basketball players in the state, regardless of classification.

Madsen, bound for UC Irvine this fall on a basketball scholarship, scored 28 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, had 10 steals (a triple-double) and added two blocked shots to lead the Cougars over the Vikings in the quarterfinals.

Freshman Makenna Klitzke added 14 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists for the Cougars — who take on Okanogan at 3:45 p.m. Friday in the semifinals.

Alana Zavala led Mabton with 18 points and 4 steals. The Vikings will play a consolation game against Colfax at 9 a.m. Friday.

DESALES 56, CUSICK 48 (OT): The Irish outscored the Panthers 10-2 in overtime to win their quarterfinal game in Spokane.

Spencer Green led DeSales with 22 points and 6 steals, while Maddox Fiona added 15 points.

Now they’ll play Mossyrock at 3:45 p.m. in a semifinal game Friday.

MOUNT VERNON CHRISTIAN 41, SUNNYSIDE CHRISTIAN 26: In Spokane, Devan Harrington had 10 points and four steals, but it wasn’t enough as Mount Vernon Christian beat the Knights in the quarterfinals.

The key was the third quarter, as Sunnyside Christian trailed just 15-9 at the half.

But the Hurricanes shut out the Knights 10-0 in the third quarter to put the game away.

Sunnyside Christian will play Garfield-Palouse at 2 p.m. Friday in a loser-out contest.
