Riverview turns to Ann Seamans as next mayor

Riverview voters are turning to Ann Seamans to run the town as she handily defeated her two rivals in Monday’s election.

The town was looking for a new mayor after Clarence Sweetland decided he would not seek re-election.

Seamans took 3,067 votes compared to Donald Lenehan’s 2,053 votes and Mark Crandall’s 1,212 votes.

There are three new councillor-at-large. Andrew LeBlanc, Cecile Cassista and Tom Toner were all elected. The only incumbent, Martha Shaw, finished fifth.

Lana Hansen is the new councillor in Ward 1, Ian MacDonald held onto his Ward 2 seat, Russel Hayward took Ward 3 over incumbent Bob Hyslop and incumbent Wayne Bennett held off two challengers in Ward 4.

There are several new faces in the seaside community of Shediac.

Jacques LeBlanc had a strong finish in the mayor’s race. LeBlanc had 1,890 votes compared to Peter Breau’s 662 votes and Gerald O’Brien’s 548 votes.

Only one of four incumbents managed to hold onto their seats on Shediac council.

Laura Gallant was re-elected but André Caissie, Normand LeBLanc and Michel Thibodeau all lost.

The new councilors are:

Sylvie Boudreau

Roger Caissie

Patricia Bourque-Chevarie

Carmel Brun

Germaine Gallant

Marc Fougere

Anita Leger-MacDonald

The small village of Memramcook also saw some close races.

Incumbent mayor Donald LeBlanc defeated George Cormier by less than 200 votes.

Joe Breau defeated incumbent at-large councillor Yolande LeBlanc by less than 200 votes.

Most of the ward races were also decided by fewer than 100 votes.

By comparison, Brian Cormier had the easiest night. He defeated George Cormier, earning 365 votes to 172 votes.

The town of Sackville will also have a new mayor.

With the incumbent retiring, Robert Berry earned a solid victory over three challengers.

The town’s voters seemed to reward incumbents.

Of the five incumbents to run again, only Virgil Hammock lost.
