Do you have a snow day? Boise State, school districts close Friday. Check your school here

Boise State University officials pre-emptively called a campus snow day for Friday — the second such shutdown this week — canceling in-person classes ahead of a winter storm that moved into the Treasure Valley early Friday morning.

A BroncoAlert sent shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday informed students and staff that community safety concerns prompted the closure. In an email to faculty and staff, school officials cited the National Weather Service’s winter storm warning, which went into effect in the Treasure Valley at 11 p.m. Thursday and expires Sunday at 5 a.m.

In-person classes were first delayed and later canceled on Wednesday at Boise State, when Boise and West Ada school districts also canceled for the day. Kuna schools were open Wednesday.

Kuna School District became the first Treasure Valley district to take action on Friday, saying in a news release that students would have a “virtual learning day.” The Vallivue and Wilder school districts also are holding virtual learning days, and the Nampa School District is closed on Friday.

The Boise, West Ada and Caldwell School Districts remained open on Friday, according to their websites.

Dan Hollar, Boise School District spokesperson, told the Idaho Statesman that when deciding whether to close schools, the district “follow(s) our inclement weather procedures, which includes checking the road conditions and monitoring information throughout the night and early morning hours.”

Snow measurements taken at the Boise Airport by the National Weather Service show Boise received just 1 inch of snow as of 6 a.m. Friday, several inches less than what was forecast earlier this week. The Treasure Valley also picked up 5.2 inches from a storm on Wednesday morning.

Several charter and private schools also announced snow days and virtual learning days. Compass Public Charter School, Elevate Academy, Gem Prep, Cole Valley Christian Schools and the Idaho Arts Charter School where among those that canceled classes or announced virtual learning days Friday.

Forecasts as recent as Thursday predicted Boise could pick up as many as 13 inches from Thursday through Saturday night, but that total has now dropped to about 9 inches after a quiet Thursday night and Friday morning. The bulk of the snow will likely arrive on Saturday, according to the Weather Service.

For those daring enough to head up to the slopes for fresh snow this week, the totals for the Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area are more eye-popping. The ski area has seen 32 inches in the past week and could pick up another 11 inches by the end of the weekend.
