Senior Labour MP Christina Rees stripped of whip and suspended pending investigation

A senior Labour MP has been suspended and stripped of the party whip pending an investigation, Sky News understands.

Christina Rees, who represents the constituency of Neath in south Wales, was shadow Welsh secretary under Jeremy Corbyn.

She will sit as an independent MP in the Commons until the investigation is concluded.

The Labour Party said it will not comment on individual cases.

Sky News has contacted Ms Rees' office for comment.

In a statement to The Guardian, she said: "There has been a complaint made against me to the Labour Party which is under investigation and I am therefore under an administrative suspension until the process is concluded.

"I'm not aware of the details of the complaint but I am fully cooperating with the investigation."

There are now 14 MPs sitting as independents in the Commons.
