The marketing game for insurance sales is a crowded field.

You have to compete with the likes of the Aflac duck, Flo, the Progressive Insurance lady, and State Farm’s revival of beloved SNL characters, like the Coneheads.

Perhaps inspired by the legends that came before him, an insurance agent in Rochester, Minn., saw a golden opportunity to market himself and he took it.

When Andrew Cooney spotted a vehicle about to get dinged for an expired meter, he did what any smart sales person would do: he paid it, and let the driver know that was just the beginning.

“I paid your parking meter for you…Imagine what else I’m willing to do to protect your car,” Cooney wrote in a note with his business card attached, according to a post on Imgur.

Cooney’s Facebook page has since been flooded with praise for the simply, yet genius, tactic.

The tactic even seems to be paying off. At least one Facebook user said she asked Cooney for a quote.

As the move gains traction online, Cooney is spinning it into an even bolder sales pitch.

“Huge thanks to everybody for the overwhelmingly positive reaction to our latest marketing tactic!” he wrote on Facebook. “We are one step closer to our ultimate goal of being a well insured community!”

Nice work, Cooney. It’s this kind of thinking that will save you from Willy Loman’s fate.
