When it comes to honesty, no one is quite as refreshing and candid as Sophie Turner.

Ever since her days on Game of Thrones, on which she played the fierce ‘Queen of the North’ Sansa Stark, the 26-year-old has kept us entertained with her relatability and quick-witted quips, whether it’s about her husband Joe Jonas’ purity rings and recalling the hilarious moment she first Justin Bieber, or her biggest fashion regret.

The ELLE UK cover star recently sat down with us to answer some questions from her friends and family including Jonas, Chrissy Teigen and Ashley Graham, and lifted the lid on why people thought she was ‘mean’ on moving to the US, what she's learned about social media and memorable first dates.

Turner will soon star in the HBO’s new domestic crime miniseries, The Staircase, exploring the story of North Carolina-based crime novelist Michael Peterson (Colin Firth), who is convicted of murdering his wife Kathleen (Toni Collette). In the show Turner plays Peterson’s adopted daughter Margaret Ratliff. ‘I was completely obsessed with the documentary and binged it,’ she recently told us. Ahead of shooting the series, she moved her husband and daughter Willa to Atlanta for nine months.

Opening up about the differences between the UK and the US (Turner currently lives in Miami, Florida with her family) in her 'Ask Me Anything: Celebrity Edition' video, she says that she misses the sarcasm of people from back home. ‘When I first went over to the US I think people just thought I was a really mean person and I’m not, I’m just sarcastic,’ the British star notes. ‘I speak to my friends here and they wouldn’t think twice.’

When Jonas asks his wife of three years to recall a funny memory from one of their dates, she said it happened on the first night they met.

‘Everything was going great - we were flirting and hitting it off,’ she tells us. ‘And he said something that just gave me the "ick", straight away. He was like “yeah, people tell me I look a lot like a young George Clooney”. And I was like “No you don’t, you don’t look a thing like a young George Clooney!". But then I was like “well, I look like a young Boy George so we’ve got the George thing going on. And then it was magic after that.’

Recalling her wedding to Jonas – the pair married in Las Vegas in May 2019 before enjoying a second ceremony in the south of France two months later – Turner says she remembers the bizarre actions of the Elvis impersonator who married them.

‘We got married with Ring Pops. And he ended up getting the Ring Pops out of the bin and the packet and selling it on eBay and sold this whole story, which is pretty funny,' she recalls.

‘On our actual wedding day [in France] – just a fun fact, it was the hottest day in French history – everyone was fainting and sweating. It was pretty nasty. It was a smelly wedding but it looked great!’

Later in the interview, she tells Teigen that one thing Jonas’ fans would love to learn about him is that he’s an ‘avid feminist’. ‘I really appreciate that about him because sometimes he checks me on certain things, like the internalised misogyny. He’ll be like “no no no, get that out of your head”, she says.

When quizzed by fellow GOT alum Nathalie Emmanuel about the one lesson she wishes she’d been taught when filming their hit HBO series, Turner admits that she’d love to have been told to stay off, or perhaps distance, herself from social media.

After becoming ‘very involved’ with her social media accounts at one point, she made the decision to deactivate her Twitter account and step back from Instagram.

‘I go into the real world now and all of those things that I thought people were saying about me or looking at you realise no one is saying that, maybe 14 people on Instagram. Even if it’s 50,000 on Instagram, it’s not the real world,’ she says.
