'It was a special place': Wine-Ohs to close in downtown Calgary
The city is about to lose another live music venue where the audience could kick back and enjoy some tunes.
Wine-Ohs Bistro and Cellar in downtown Calgary has been in operation for nearly five years and has hosted musicians like Ian Tyson and Tom Cochrane.
Owner Alanna Martineau told the Calgary Eyeopener since announcing the closure she has learned how much the venue meant to people.
"The outpouring of support, and people saying thank you, has been really amazing," she said. "Just to hear that it was a special place to a lot of other people means a lot to me."
Martineau said it's a tough business to be in, with musician and equipment costs, but — combined with the effects of the 2013 flood and the recession — it became too much over the last few weeks.
"It was one of those situations where everything that could go wrong did go wrong from a business perspective," she said.
Martineau said there have been far too many live music venues closing in the past few years in Calgary.
Wine-Ohs is holding its final shows this weekend.
