A man has been bitten on the penis by a spider while using a portable toilet.

The construction worker was sitting on a portaloo at a building site in Sydney, Australia when he was bitten by a redback spider.

The man took himself to hospital after being bitten on Wednesday morning.

St George Hospital confirmed a 21-year-old man was treated for a spider bite.

The redback is named for the thick red stripe on its body and its bite causes severe pain, sweating and nausea.

The man was later discharged for hospital and was said to be in a stable condition.

About 2,000 people are bitten by redback spiders in Australia each year.

There have been no recorded deaths from a redback bite since the introduction of antivenom in 1956.

Associate Professor Julian White from Adelaide’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital, told The Advertiser: “Going back 80 years or so when people were still using outhouse toilets it was extremely common.

“Something like up to 80 per cent of cases of spider bites were bites on the male genitalia.

“Typically they were using the toilet. But it’s much less common now.”
