Suspect charged with 2nd-degree murder in case of missing Chestermere man

A Calgary man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a Chestermere man who was reported missing earlier this month.

Shane Eric James Smith, 20, of Chestermere, was reported missing by family on June 7, having been last seen in the community of McKenzie Towne the day prior.

Police believe that Smith was killed at a residence in southeast Calgary late the day before he was reported missing. Police have not found Smith's body.

Ian Charles Abercrombie, 24, of Calgary, has been charged with:

  • One count of second-degree murder.

  • One count of indignity to a human body.

  • One count of breaching a court order and breach of a firearm prohibition order.

Police said last week that Smith's vehicle, a gold 2002 Nissan Maxima, was parked near the Deerfoot Trail bridge over the Bow River at the southern city limits, sometime between 11 p.m. on June 6 and the morning of June 9.

Investigators are now looking to speak with anyone who drove over the Bow River bridge on Deerfoot Trail S.E. between midnight on June 6, and 9 a.m. June 7, and have dashcam footage.

Police will hold a media availability at 11 a.m. on Wednesday to discuss the case.
