“Ted Lasso'”s Sam Richardson Shares Details of His 'Really Sweet' 40th Birthday Party with Show Castmates (Exclusive)
The actor threw a huge bash to celebrate turning 40, and his costars Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt showed up for the fun
Sam Richardson celebrated a big milestone with his Ted Lasso family!
The actor tells PEOPLE that some of his castmates from the hit Apple TV+ series came out to help him celebrate his 40th birthday in Los Angeles.
"I had a big party at the Den in West Hollywood," he shares while attending the Emmys Performer Nominees Celebration on Saturday. "A bunch of my friends came out. It was great. It was really fun."
Richardson — who turned 40 on Friday — rented out the entire venue and invited about 200 friends to join the fun. "It was a really sweet celebration," he recalls.
The guest list included his Ted Lasso costars Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt. Richardson says he was thrilled at the turnout, after fretting that the timing for the party wasn't ideal.
"Yeah, because with the awards pushing to January, I was kind of worried at first. I was like, 'Oh no, is everybody going to be too busy?' And it’s like, 'No, everyone's gonna be in town.' So it worked out," he explains.
Richardson says he loves a good party for the chance it offers to catch up with friends. "I like my birthday parties because everybody who doesn't get to see each other gets to see each other, so it's always like, 'Oh my God, I haven't seen you in so long!' "
One highlight of the night, Richardson says, was the killer playlist. "Four of my friends DJed and swapped it up. All my favorite music — ska and hip-hop and classic rock and yacht rock — so it was a good party," he raves.
He also joked about his struggles to blow out his candles — after all, there were 40 of them. "The candles were on the outside rim," he explained. "[The cake] was presented to me, and I'm having to blow over the cake and so it took me, like, four times and it was embarrassing."

Richardson's birthday bash capped off an epic week for the Veep alum. At the 75th Annual Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Jan. 6, he won a trophy for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series.
Richardson prevailed against some fierce competition in the category: Jon Bernthal (The Bear), Luke Kirby (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Nathan Lane (Only Murders in the Building), Oliver Platt (The Bear) and Pedro Pascal (Saturday Night Live).

After his big win, he told the press at the ceremony that the award "means the world to me," especially due to his close connection to the show's creative team.
"Some of my best friends wrote it [Ted Lasso] ... so it's nice to come back to family," he said.
Richardson also shared his rather surprising plans for celebrating the major new career accolade — spending some down time with his cat, Conan O'Meowan. When asked about his Emmys night comment, the actor told PEOPLE that he and the feline did indeed hang out, joking that their relationship hasn't changed since he earned Emmy winner status.
"He doesn't treat me any different since I've won an Emmy. So, a humbling experience," he quipped, adding of his close bond with his pet, "That cat, he's my familiar. And we talk. I talk to him, he talks back."
The Afterparty star also celebrated with his favorite human — his girlfriend, Nicole Boyd — in a very low-key way. "We just watched reruns of Scrubs, watched The Simpsons episodes and just enjoyed the day after," he tells PEOPLE.
"For Christmas, I got this thing called the Bartesian and so it mixes drinks. And so just enjoyed the Bartesian in the house and just had a good time," he adds with a laugh.
