Teghan's top 5 things to do this weekend in Winnipeg (Dec. 9-11)

Teghan's top 5 things to do this weekend in Winnipeg (Dec. 9-11)

The arctic chill is finally here, so I feel comfortable recommending five completely indoor events this weekend.

Highlights this week are Home Alone trivia at Wee Johnny's with the very funny Melanie Dahling and Dan Goldberg and the Art City talent show. They're raising money for the United Way, so you should go and see the show!

If you've got kids that need to get out of the house but five minutes standing on a snowbank isn't going to cut it, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra is playing E.T. on their big screen and playing all the orchestral bits along with the movie.

WHAT: COMEDY — Hip.Bang and HUNKS

When: Friday, Dec. 9 at 9 p.m.

Where: The Park Theatre at 698 Osborne St.

Cost: $20

HUNKS are back at The Park Theatre this weekend celebrating a year of touring with a show full of all new sketches.

Plus they're bringing in a fancy sketch group from Vancouver called Hip.Bang!

Hip.Bang are doing their sketch comedy show The History of Romance that covers everything from Shakespeare to modern romance.

I'm just about fed up with Christmas music and fancy parties right now, so this will be a nice break from the holiday onslaught.

Bring someone who likes quirky comedy. If they don't laugh, you don't have to hang out with them again.

WHAT: HOLIDAY STUFF — Home Alone trivia at Wee Johnny's

When: Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m.

Where: Wee Johnny's at 177 McDermot Ave.

Cost: $5

Wee Johnny's is doing a very fun and cute thing on Saturday night. They're hosting trivia from Home Alone.

Local comics Melanie Dahling and Dan Goldberg are hosting the event and apparently there will be a drinking game accompanying the trivia?

No need to sign up in advance (which is great, because who is organized enough for that that?), just show up and put your name on the sheet.

Teams have to be two to five people though, so find a friend.

At the end there's apparently a custom trophy, which frankly better be a Talkboy or I will throw an absolute fit.

Oh, and one last thing, people who very wrongly like Home Alone 2: Lost in New York better than the original will be pleased to hear the trivia covers both movies.

WHAT: VARIETY — Art City/Graffiti Gallery talent show

When: Saturday, Dec. 10 at 8 p.m.

Where: The Good Will at 625 Portage Ave.

Cost: $10

Art City's annual talent show is back at The Good Will this weekend.

Every year, Art City gets together with the Graffiti Gallery to put on a variety show to raise money for the United Way.

The acts are usually between five and 10 minutes, and there's a DJ dance party after.

These parties are always a lot of fun, and they bring some very lovely people together, so it's worth checking out after you're done with trivia in the Exchange!

WHAT: MUSIC — Ladies of the 80s at Times Change(d)

When: Saturday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Where: Times Change(d) at 234 Main St.

Cost: $15

Times Change(d) is bringing in some incredibly talented musicians for another night of 80s music.

Jill Lynott is doing songs by The Pretenders, Romi Mayes is doing Joan Jett and Pat Benetar tracks and Joanne Rodriguez will be Blondie.

They'll also be backed up by a live band and because this one is likely to fill up and sell out, there are two shows Saturday night.
You can catch the early show at 7 p.m. or try and stay up for the late show at 10 p.m.

WHAT: KIDS — WSO plays E.T.

When: Sunday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Where: The Centennial Concert Hall at 555 Main St.

Cost: $25 to $125

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra is showing E.T. on Sunday and playing all the music parts live!

The entire orchestra will synchronize with the movie, playing John Williams original score.

Williams is the same guy who created scores for Jurassic Park, Home Alone and Star Wars.

This one has two showings and will be very family friendly.

If you go a bit early, there will be performances beforehand as well.
