Tombs get raided in first look at “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” anime series
Lara Croft is back to raid tombs in the first-look teaser for Netflix's upcoming anime series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.
Following years of gestation, the streaming service finally unveiled the first official preview of the TV project Wednesday at its DROP 01 event, after first announcing the show back in 2021.
Featuring the voice of Hayley Atwell, the series is based on the legendary video game series that follows Croft, a globetrotting adventurer who became a '90s pop culture icon upon the worldwide success of the first Tomb Raider game in 1996.
The first teaser from the show features flashes of Croft spelunking into a large cavern, shooting an arrow from a bow, uncovering mystic artifacts, and, of course, looking super moody as she gazes upon a photo of her friends.
"The scripts are fantastic and I've seen parts of the animation," Atwell teased of the project in a July interview with The Movie Dweeb. "It's really poignant and funny and light, and I've loved doing it. I think the thing that they get so well is they really understand the tone of it, but they're also pushing it forward into what the fans want, but it's a natural progression of where it could go next. I love it."
Outside of the Netflix anime series, Alicia Vikander, who portrayed Croft in the 2018 blockbuster film Tomb Raider, was initially set to return for a supposed sequel, though she told EW in 2022 that the movie was in limbo.

"With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it's kind of politics," Vikander says, referencing Amazon's multi-billion-dollar acquisition of MGM. "I think Misha and I have been ready, so it's kind of in somebody else's hands, to be honest."
The Danish Girl star's turn Croft grossed $274 million at the global box office, 17 years after Angelina Jolie first brought the character to the big screen in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
There's also no official word on when fans might be able to play as Croft in another Tomb Raider video game, with the last installment, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, releasing in 2018.
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft does not yet have a release date, though it is expected in 2024 via Netflix, Legendary, Crystal Dynamics, and Powerhouse Animation. Watch the first teaser trailer above.
